Can I be fired without good reason?
Yes, but your employer must tell you ahead of time in writing. This is called “notice”. You should get notice even if you are laid off. How much notice you get depends on how long you have worked for your employer.
What if I am fired without notice?
Your employer must pay you the normal wage for the notice time you should have received. But you can be fired without notice or pay if you have worked for less than three months, or your employer has good reasons under the law.
What must my employer give me when I am fired or I quit?
Your employer must give you your Record of Employment. You will need this if you apply for unemployment insurance benefits. Your employer must pay your wages and vacation pay within seven days. Your employer must pay any other money owed to you within 14 days. If you quit your job, you should give notice to your employer. If you don’t, you might not get a reference from the employer. Good references are important.
Can my employer fire me if I get pregnant?
No. Being pregnant is not a reason to fire you. If you worked for your employer for at least 13 weeks, you must get at least 17 weeks “pregnancy leave” (time off). You have to tell your employer in writing at least two weeks before you leave. The employer does not have to pay you for this time. But you might get unemployment insurance benefits. You can go back to your job after the pregnancy leave. You must get the same wages as before.
