The OFL awards two scholarships worth $2,000 each to a member or the child of a member of a local union affiliated to the OFL. The scholarships are awarded in honour of distinguished trade union activists selected by representatives of the OFL Executive Board.
The deadline for applications is Friday, May 27, 2011.
The winners will be announced by Tuesday, July 5, 2011.

THE 2008 OFL LABOUR HONOUR ROLL SCHOLARSHIP
The OFL is pleased to call for applications for its annual Labour Honour Roll Scholarship.
The OFL awards two scholarships worth $2,000 each to a member or the child of a member of a local union affiliated to the OFL. The scholarships are awarded in honour of distinguished trade union activists selected by representatives of the OFL Executive Board.
The deadline for applications is June 30, 2008.
The winners will be announced by August 31, 2008.

OFL LABOUR HONOUR ROLL SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS 2007
Each year the OFL awards two scholarships in honour of five distinguished trade unionists.
The 2007 awards were given in honour of:
Robert (Bob) Beames, OSSTF (deceased)
Janiss Davidson, ONA
Carol McGregor, OPSEU (deceased)
Frank Mazur, TCU (USW) (deceased)
Nycole Turmel (PSAC)
Applications for the scholarships were to include a 1,000 word essay on “Why should there be a $10 minimum wage for all Ontario workers, regardless of age and occupation?”
This year’s winners are: Hillary Jolliffe from London, Ontario who entered the Kinesiology program at Brescia University College at the University of Western Ontario; and Austin Simpson from Oshawa entered Carlton University in Ottawa to study Mechanical Engineering.
The Federation congratulates both winners and wishes them good luck in their studies.
SolidarityWORKS! 2007

Since 1999, SolidarityWORKS! has provided a forum that brings labour and community activists together with young workers (30 years of age and under) who receive hands-on training on labour issues such as workers rights, human rights, health and safety, education, organizing and mobilizing.
This year following the “training” portion, 20 of the participants will be given the opportunity to put their new skills into action during a five-day on-the-job placement with one labour or community-based organization. Those selected for the “training into action” portion will continue-on for the remainder of the week working with their designated organization.

OFL Workers Under 30 Conference
Friday, March 16, 2007
9:00 am to 9:00 pm
Join workers under 30 and other youth to discuss organizing and mobilizing strategies for youth.
This one day conference will feature a variety of speakers with lots of time for discussion, networking and strategy development.
The Conference will take place in downtown Toronto at the OPSEU offices at 31 Wellesley Street East (Church and Wellesley).
The registration fee is only $30, but the registration deadline is March 9.

OFL LABOUR HONOUR ROLL SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS 2006
Each year the OFL awards two scholarships in honour of five distinguished trade unionists.
The 2006 awards were given in honour of: Allan Budway, Sheet Metal Workers; Selma Garten CUPE; Tom Kukovica UFCW; Michael Lewis USW; Bonnie Robichaud PSAC
Applications for the scholarships were to include a 1,000 word essay on “How will public-private partnerships affect the future of students and workers under 30 in Ontario, particularly workers and students from equity seeking groups?”.
This year’s winners are:
Kristin Kniehl, from Etobicoke, Ontario who entered the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto for a degree as Master of Education, Sociology in Education; and
Jennifer Macfarlane of Waterdown, Ontario who entered Engineering 1 at McMaster University.
Good luck to Kristin and Jennifer in their studies.
WORK at RIGHTS Conference
The OFL’s two-day “Workers Under 30” Conference will give workers 30 years of age and under hands-on knowledge of unions and workers’ rights in Ontario. Workshops on health & safety laws, organizing unions, grievances and arbitrations, workplace rights, protecting Human Rights and privatization and municipal elections will be held over the two-day conference.
Community and student activists are invited to join the conference.
Deadline for registration is September 22, 2006.

Scholarship Winners 2005
Each year the OFL awards two scholarships in honour of five distinguished trade unionists.
The 2005 awards are given in honour of Judy D’Arcy, Canadian Union of Public Employees, Susan Giampietri, Public Service Alliance of Canada, Neville Hamilton, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, John McEwen, Cornwall & District Labour Council (deceased) and Ted Roscoe, Service Employees International Union (deceased).
Applications for the scholarships were to include a 1,000 word essay on, “What role should trade unions have in contributing and demystifying the barriers that affect youth from accessing post secondary education?”
This year’s winners are:
Erik Koopmans from Whitby who is enrolled at McGill University in Montreal for a four year Bachelor of Arts & Science program majoring in physics and music, and Brian Slack from Sarnia who is entering a Bachelor of Technology Program in Computer Information Systems at RCC Institute of Technology in Concord, Ontario.
Good luck to both Erik and Brian in their studies.

UFCW Canada has made youth a priority.
The United Food and Commercial Workers (Canada), National Youth Committee has been very active since it was founded in June of 2001.
Lots of programs and initiatives have been developed to increase the participation of our young members.
Here are some programs and initiatives you can get involve in.
SolidarityWORKS!
Started in 1999, SolidarityWORKS! Is a pilot project that brings together young people (30 and under); union members or community activists in a residential setting to receive hands-on training around labour issues such as workers’ rights, human rights, health & safety, education, organizing and mobilizing.
What we’re goind to do with this knowledge - Comments from past SolidarityWORKS! participants
“Try to continue working with the Ontario NDP Caucus.”
“Go back and help teach - network.”
“Try to volunteer more of our time and effort into organizations that we really believe in.”
“Make sure we all keep in touch.”
“Continue to fight for this program, it is vital.”

“Try to continue working with the Steelworkers in the fall.”
“Bring back all this information to our friends and the people around us. Encourage all our friends to learn more about their rights and organize their workplaces.”
